Across the world, intersecting crises of war, authoritarianism, ecological collapse, displacement, rising fascism, and inequality are reshaping political life. Yet catastrophe also generates new forms of political imagination. Drawing on political anthropology, critical theory, decolonial and feminist thought, this seminar explores how communities respond to crisis by building democratic alternatives. Through examples from Kurdistan, Rojava, Iran, Palestine, Indigenous movements, Latin America, and beyond, we examine autonomy, mutual aid, feminist organizing, and self-government, approaching utopia as a practical politics of solidarity, care, and collective life.
